Adjucation criteria IOC IAKS Architecture Prize

The jury shall adjudicate all submissions independently of their size and budget on the basis of the following principal criteria:

Architectural and technical aspects

  • Integration in the urban environment or into the landscape
  • Design concept and its quality
  • Programming and functional planning, technical features
  • Innovation and imagination

Sustainability aspects and public value

  • Legacy concept
  • Ecological sustainability (significant innovations, environmental design)
  • Economical sustainability (operational / management concept)
  • Social / community aspects (socially meaningful legacy for all members of a community)
  • Support of health, well-being and active living

Accessibility aspects

  • Accessibility and universal design / inclusive features for the widest possible range of users

In its adjudication, the jury will take the differing economic and social conditions at the various locations into consideration.

The jury shall adjudicate all submissions independently of their size and budget on the basis of the following principal criteria:

  • Imagination and innovation
  • Design concept and its quality
  • Integration in the urban environment or into the landscape in terms of aesthetics and easy access
  • Sustainability principles in terms of environmental, social and economic impact
  • Adaptation to the consequences of climate change
  • Social/community aspects (socially meaningful legacy for all members of a community)
  • Promotion of physical activities for everyone without exemption, support of health, well-being and active living
  • Accessibility and universal design / inclusive features for the widest possible range of users
  • The dimension of accessibility must be distinctly, visibly and consistently presented in the brief and in the design

Gary Conrad Boychuk

Gary Conrad Boychuk is one of Canada’s foremost designers of multi-purpose mid-size spectator venues. He has been involved in over 120 sports and recreation initiatives throughout Canada and the United States. Conrad has extensive experience in the public consultation process and the development of master plans and feasibility studies that reflect broad-based community needs while recognizing and responding to financial and economic impact. Conrad is Canada’s national representative on the International Union of Architects’ Sports and Leisure Group.

Klaus Meinel 

Klaus Meinel has been responsible for the management of IAKS since 2003. In 2015 he was appointed IAKS Secretary General. In 1997 Klaus joined the IAKS headquarters in Cologne as a scientific staff member. From 1995 to 1997, he was a technical officer at the German Association of Landscape Architects in Bonn and Berlin. Klaus holds a diploma in landscape architecture after having visited universities in Hanover (Germany) and Tours (France) from 1988 to 1995.

Maria de Lourdes

Architect and Master of Design in Landscape and Garden Design, Planning, and Conservation. A full-time professor and researcher at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City. Speaker at national and international events. 

An author of: ‘Architecture: A teaching alternative – site anallysis’, ‘Recreation: A case study, Mexico City, 1930-1969’, ‘Quality of life. Recreational spaces. Planning Azcapotzalco’, ‘Street play. Recreation time’.

Was a member of the Citizen Observatory of Mexico City on the ‘Maintenance of Public Space’ panel. Currently is Vice President of IAKS LAC.

Nicole Stobbe

Nicole is an experienced architect specializing in sustainable public buildings, including sports and educational facilities. She has extensive experience in both new construction and renovation projects, with a strong focus on functionality, environmental responsibility, and user involvement. Nicole has particular expertise in the use of cross-laminated timber and Nordic Swan Ecolabel-certified solutions, and she applies a holistic approach to material selection and building technology.

Her design philosophy places the user experience at its heart, resulting in inclusive and adaptable environments that actively foster physical activity, health, and a strong sense of community. The innovative design of her recent school and sports projects has garnered particular attention within the architectural community.
